Research Services
Southwest CARE Center is the leading HIV research site in New Mexico. Two principals underpin our research program:
1. The research must provide an option or options for treating our patients which is otherwise unavailable.
2. The research must significantly add to the body of knowledge about HIV and/or its' treatment.

Unless we are certain that one or other of these principals has been met, we do not proceed with the research protocol.

We pride ourselves on the care and attention we give to our research program. Safety is our first goal and this means strict monitoring and close scrutiny of our research patients. We have a number of staff who are dedicated full time to the program and all the clinical staff are kept abreast of what we are doing.

Studies may be sponsored by pharmaceutical companies who are developing a new drug, by government or academic centers, or studies may be developed by our own team. All protocols are under the umbrella of an independent review board whose primary concern is patient safety and freedom of choice.

We have an excellent reputation, both nationally and internationally, for our contributions to the research that has moved the field so quickly; from a disease that was almost uniformly fatal to one that is effectively managed in a way that gives patients the possibility of a normal life span. We have published our research findings in a number of leading journals and have presented our findings at major conferences.

One of the advantages for a patient to being in a research study is that the drugs are usually provided free of charge with no co-pay. Also, because of the close scrutiny that happens in a research study, extra care and help is available to the patient. Many of our patients express their desire to help in the research effort and find their participation rewarding.

If you are our patient, it is important to remember that if you are approached by a member of the staff about the possibility of being in a study, no attempt will be made to persuade you against your wishes to be in a study and your care will not be affected in any way if you decline.

If you would like more information about our research program, please feel free to contact a member of the staff. We are proud of this program and will be happy to share information about it with you.
