Two principals underpin our research program:
- The research must provide an option or options for treating our patients that is otherwise unavailable.
- The research must significantly add to the body of knowledge about HIV and/or its treatment.
Unless we are certain that one or both of these principals has been met, we do not proceed with a research protocol.
We pride ourselves on the care and attention we give to our research program. Safety is our first goal, which means that we practice strict monitoring and close scrutiny of the patients who are enrolled in clinical studies. We have a number of full-time staff dedicated to this program.
Studies may be sponsored by pharmaceutical companies that are developing a new drugs or by government or academic centers. In addition, studies may be developed by our own SCC team. All protocols are under the umbrella of an independent review board whose primary concern is patient safety and freedom of choice.
Southwest CARE Center has an excellent reputation, both nationally and internationally, for its contributions to the research that has moved the field of HIV from a disease that was almost uniformly fatal to one that is effectively managed in a way that gives the patient the possibility of a normal life span. Our research findings have been published in a number of leading journals and have been presented at major conferences.
One of the advantages of being in a research study is that the drugs and laboratory tests are usually provided free of charge. Also, because of the close scrutiny that is required in a research study, extra care and support are available to the patient. Many of our patients express their desire to help in the research effort and find their participation rewarding.
If you are our patient, it is important to remember that if you are approached by a member of the staff about the possibility of being in a study, no attempt will be made to persuade you against your wishes to participate and your care will not be affected in any way if you decline.
If you would like more information about SCC’s research program, please feel free to contact a member of the staff. We are proud of this program and will be happy to share information about it with you.
