Why is Family Medicine Important?

Family medicine is primary care (your day-to-day healthcare) designed to serve the needs of a patient across his or her lifespan, from infant to senior, or as we sometimes say, “from pediatrics to geriatrics.” Southwest Care Center is perfectly sized and organized to provide family medicine the right way. We are big enough to offer the convenience of being able to choose from a number of convenient clinics with top-notch providers and to have many levels of expertise available to you (see our Support Services), yet we are small enough that we still prioritize patients over profits and customized care over one-size-fits-all solutions. We believe in the importance of communities over corporations, which is why we don’t provide “big-box” medicine, we provide patient-centric, whole-person medicine for people of all walks of life in our New Mexico community. Whether it is immunizations for your child, a sports physical for your teenager, a checkup for yourself, or assisting grandparents with controlling their diabetes, we hope you will choose Southwest Care Center and let us show you the difference we can make in your life and your health. If you believe like we do, that medicine must be personalized, based on trust, and available when you need it, please call and make an appointment at 505.988.8869.

Southwest Care Center offers these services and many more as a way of supporting the health and wellness of your entire family: Checkups Checkups are generally quick visits, often for a specific reason such as a follow-up visit after a medical procedure, an evaluation how a certain medication(s) is working, or many other reasons. Diabetes Treatment & Management Southwest Care Center provides quality comprehensive diabetes management and education to empower people with diabetes and prediabetes to better manage the disease, avoid potential complications, and achieve optimum health. Immunizations Our providers promote the well-being of our community by providing children and adults protection against vaccine-preventable disease. Annual Wellness Exams/Visits An annual wellness exam focuses on prevention rather than specific health problems or symptoms. During an annual exam, your doctor will take time to get to know you and your lifestyle, your health goals, as well as any problems you may be experiencing so he or she can make recommendations to help you reach your highest potential for health. Annual wellness exams are tailored to the current recommendations of health organizations and insurers to help you understand the health screenings that may be beneficial for you based on your health concerns or risks. These visits are typically covered by insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare Wellness Exam Well-Child Visits Geriatric Annual Wellness Physicals Physicals are more involved examinations which focus more on your overall health and health goals, and many of the services are not covered by insurance. Besides just taking routine measurements, your physician will usually examine the head, neck, heart, lungs, and abdomen, and he or she may suggest blood and/or urine tests. These types of exams are commonly required for students to participate in sports, as well as weekend warriors and other adults who are interested in competing or want to raise their level of fitness but feel the need to get the all-clear from a physician before they begin. Sports Physicals Travel Medicine Planning a big trip? We know there’s a lot to consider, and we’re here to help you with your travel vaccinations and offer travel health advice.
