Southwest CARE has long been the specialist of choice for infectious diseases in Northern New Mexico. Our team of providers, nurses, pharmacists, and case managers understands the rapidly-advancing changes in hepatitis C virus (HCV) therapy, and has overseen treatment of more than 1,100 people since 2014. Southwest CARE offers patients the opportunity to receive state-of-the-art HCV treatment, access to clinical trials through our Research Department, personalized case management and insurance advocacy, and referrals to liver specialists and transplant centers if needed.

Paying for Services

Our HCV Program accepts all insurance (except those only covered through veteran’s benefits without other insurance), and does not require a referral. Uninsured or under-insured patients may qualify for sliding scale discounts for services and/or free medication. For patients with insurance, in most cases we can help you access medications for HCV treatment at little or no cost.

Services Offered

Case Management

At Southwest CARE, every patient receives case management services. We help guide you through every step of the process, from scheduling an initial assessment through confirmation of cure. Case managers have years of experience handling the unique issues surrounding HCV, including insurance and financial assistance, pharmacy benefits, transportation assistance, referrals to housing and food assistance programs, access to infection prevention services like syringe exchange, and help with coordinating your medical services.

On-Site Laboratory

Blood tests are needed to guide treatment of hepatitis C and to confirm a cure. For your convenience, we have a lab on-site at all clinics. And if you have “difficult veins,” multiple staff members are trained phlebotomists and will work with you and treat you with respect to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

Pharmacy

Southwest CARE Pharmacy, with branches in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, is one of only two URAC-certified Specialty Pharmacies in New Mexico, with extensive experience in HCV antiviral therapy. Staff is available to answer questions regarding medication interactions, and to perform consultations regarding over-the-counter medications, supplements, or how to manage multiple conditions while undergoing HCV treatment.

Medical Providers

At our specialty clinics, treating HCV is a full-time occupation, and we remain focused on this condition every day. Our Providers include Medical Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians’ Assistants. Together, we draw on many years of experience with HCV and other infectious diseases, such as HIV, to provide state-of-the-art care.
