Southwest Care Center Prepares to Turn Corner

2021 will mark 25 years of Southwest Care Center (SCC) providing health services to the people of New Mexico.  SCC was founded in 1996 as a clinic championing healthcare for those living with HIV/AIDS while researching the disease and its treatment. Since then, they have expanded the scope of its services to meet the various needs of the local Santa Fe community, as well as to fill gaps in the broader New Mexico healthcare system.

In 2012, Southwest Care Center took an ambitious step by acquiring an additional clinic site in Santa Fe. This new site allowed Southwest Care Center to expand access to primary care services by including adult family medicine in its offerings. A year later in 2013, SCC merged with another local health organization, Women’s Health and Family Medicine Services (WHS) which became its third clinic in Santa Fe. In the last few years, SCC has expanded to meet the needs for HIV and hepatitis C services in Albuquerque, Farmington and Roswell. As a result, SCC is now the healthcare provider of choice for an even greater number of economically, socially and culturally vulnerable individuals and families.

As it approaches its 25th year of operations the face of SCC continues to change while adapting to life in the age of COVID-19. SCC’s historic annual fundraiser, the AID & Comfort Gala, normally held in late fall will be sidelined as all large events have been this year, instead, the organization is considering on-line fundraising opportunities for 2021.  Juanita Thorne-Connerty, former board member who served on the AID & Comfort Committee and was as a volunteer for over 30 years has retired from her positions along with previous board chair, Mary Ann Schaening, and former CEO, Jeff Thomas. “Juanita, Mary Ann and Jeff helped build a remarkable culture at SCC instilling a heart of service and a desire for excellence. Their hard work and contributions will long be remembered here.” said Dr, Kris Drummond, current Chief Executive Officer.  “And with change brings new opportunities. As we begin our 26thyear of operations we are planning to re-shape the face of SCC and re-evaluate elements of our strategic plan so as to further provide increased care to our diverse population”.

COVID-19 Response

Steps have been taken so patients can keep up with their visits and medical care in a safe and effective way during the coronavirus pandemic.  An option for telemedicine visits to patients at home that can be done by phone or a secure video conferencing connection. Almost all of a patient’s needs can be met via telemedicine, including medication refills, orders for necessary lab tests, and managing of patients’ health concerns. In-person visits are still available. 

Also available are behavioral health specialists who manage patients’ symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression.  In addition, case managers are available who help with navigating financial and insurance concerns.  SCC pharmacies offer special services for home delivery.

A “respiratory clinic” has been established where patient’s with respiratory symptoms that may be a result of the coronavirus or another infection can be seen the same or next day by one of our medical providers.
