What is Long Covid?

Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), more commonly known as Long Covid, refers to a post-Covid condition in which people who have recovered from the virus continue to experience symptoms for weeks or months after the initial infection. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can affect multiple organ systems in the body.

What causes Long Covid?

The cause of Long Covid is still being researched, but it is thought to be related to the body’s immune response to the initial Covid-19 infection, as well as possible ongoing viral activity in some cases. Research is ongoing to understand the underlying mechanisms and to develop effective Long Covid treatments.

Symptoms of Long Covid

Common symptoms of Long Covid that have been reported include fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, joint pain, headache, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Some people also report gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

What are Long Covid treatment options?

Long Covid can affect people of all ages and can occur even in people who had mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 infections. The symptoms of long COVID can be debilitating and have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life.

There is currently no cure, and treatments are focused on managing individual symptoms. Long Covid treatment options may include medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and mental health support.
